Riding Vests: Protection that moves with you

A riding vest is one of the most important investments you make as a rider. Not because you expect to fall, but because you know it can happen, and you want to be prepared when it does.

The YELM Helium Vest is an EN 1621-2 Level 2 certified back protector vest, designed to deliver a high level of protection without compromising mobility or comfort. Level 2 is the higher of the two performance levels in the standard, which means the vest is approved to absorb high impact forces to the back, the area the standard covers and one of the most vulnerable in a fall.

What makes a great riding vest?

Many riding vests on the market meet the basic requirements. A truly great riding vest is one you barely notice while riding. It fits correctly, breathes well and lets you move freely in the saddle, whether you are training jumping, dressage or hacking out.

The Helium Vest is made from stretch material that adapts to your body and works for all body types. Multiple riders describe it as completely forgetting they are wearing it. That is exactly what a riding vest should do.

Riding vest and helmet, a complete protection system

Your body is best protected when your equipment is designed to work together. That is why YELM also offers the Helium Vest as a bundle with the Hybrid Helmet 2.0, a MIPS equipped riding helmet with magnetic closure. Helmet and vest are developed by the same brand, with the same philosophy: protection that stays out of your way, every ride.

FAQ RIDING VEST

What is a riding vest?

A riding vest is a piece of equestrian protective equipment designed to absorb and distribute impact energy in certain types of falls. It is worn over or under riding apparel and is intended to complement other protective equipment, such as a riding helmet.

Do you need a riding vest?

Wearing a riding vest is a personal safety choice. Some riders choose to wear one during training or competition to add an extra layer of protection, particularly in situations where the risk of accidents or falls may be higher.

Which riding vests are approved?

An approved riding vest is one that has been tested and certified against a recognised European standard, is correctly CE marked, and states both the standard and the protection level on its label.

EN 1621-2 is the standard for back protectors, where Level 2 represents the higher of the two performance levels. Check the label inside the vest or the product documentation for the standard reference before buying.

What is the difference between a riding vest and an airbag vest?

A riding vest provides passive protection through impact-absorbing materials that are always active while riding. An airbag vest uses a mechanical or electronic system designed to inflate during a fall. The choice between the two depends on riding preferences, intended use, comfort, and how the rider wants the protective equipment to function.

How long does a riding vest last?

The lifespan of a riding vest depends on factors such as material wear, frequency of use, and exposure to moisture, sweat, and impact. If a vest has been involved in a significant fall or shows signs of damage or reduced performance, it should be replaced.

Is a riding vest right for all riders?

A riding vest may be suitable for riders of different experience levels, but its relevance varies depending on factors such as personal safety preference, discipline or riding style. Comfort, fit, and intended use are key considerations when deciding whether a vest is right for you.
